Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tri-State offer both full and part-time classes?

At Tri-State our full-time classes are Tuesday – Saturday from 8am to 5pm. Part-time classes are also Tuesday-Saturday and are from 8am to 12pm.

How many hours will it take me to complete the course?

The course is 1,500 hours and will take a full-time student approximately 9 ½ months to complete. A part-time student will take approximately 18 months to complete the 1,500 hours required.

What will be covered over those 1,500 hours?

Courses of instruction in histology of the hair, skin, muscles, and nerves of the face and neck; elementary chemistry with emphasis on sterilization and antiseptics; disease of the skin, hair, and glands; massaging and manipulating of the muscles of the upper body; cutting, shaving, arranging, dressing, coloring, bleaching, and tinting the hair and such other courses as may be prescribed by regulation of the board.

How soon will I be able to start classes?

Mandatory orientation classes are given every Friday and Saturday, once a potential student has attended the two day (8 hours per day) sessions, they will begin their time on the following Tuesday.

After completing the 1,500 hours then what?

Following completion of this course your 1,500 hours will be certified and mailed to the Kentucky State Board of Barbering along with an application for examination form, once all fees owed to Tri-State Institute of Hair Design have been paid in full. You will then need to schedule a time with the Board to take your Apprenticeship Examinations in order to become an Apprentice Barber.

How soon will I be working on actual clients?

When the Kentucky State Board of Barbering sends your permit to Tri-State and your instructors have said your instruction on mannequins is complete you will be released to work on clients on the clinic floor. Until then you will work on mannequins.

How much time will be spent in the classroom each day?

You will spend approximately 1 hour on classroom instruction and approximately
7 hours on the clinic floor.
